![]() ![]() Yes, using Pokémon GO Plus is better than having the game open and active on your screen all the time, but it’s using GPS, and every time you spin a Pok éStop or catch a Pokémon, a notification flashes on your phone, lighting up the screen. What tracking-while-locked actually does for the game is save battery life, but not as much as you might think. Maybe this feature is being purposefully held back to sell Pluses (though they’re sold out anyway) or maybe there’s some technical challenge I don’t understand, but it’s strange all the same. It seems like there should be some setting that allows the game to do this natively, without a peripheral, which is something fans have been dying to see ever since launch. I am confused about why the Plus is needed in order to allow the game to track distance when your phone is locked. The question is why Pokémon GO does not have a feature like this in the game itself. On my iPhone, that means a little blue indicator bar that shows up at the top of the screen that says “ Pokémon GO is using your location,” a safeguard against apps that would otherwise be spying on you, I suppose. The way it does this is by communicating with GO the same way say, Google Maps does when you’re actively using GPS. I can finally confirm that yes, Pokémon GO Plus does track distance for eggs and buddies with the app in the background, or more importantly, with your phone locked. Although you could put this thing on a Rolex watchband and I still probably wouldn’t wear it.īut functionality, not style, is why players are clamoring for one of these things, and it does a bit more than anyone was anticipating, and certainly more than Nintendo’s own marketing department was indicating. The bracelet is terrible, but that’s mostly due to how it looks. I can’t really give it the full iPhone 7 analysis here, as there isn’t that much to it. It’s literally just a button, shaped like a Pok éball/GPS location indicator. I don’t think it feels “cheap” as many are saying, as it’s about what you’d expect for a piece of electronics that costs $35. I opted for none of these options, as I’m not comfortable enough with myself to be walking around with a Pok éball-like gadget displayed on my body, so I simply held it the palm of my hand, which meant I never missed a buzz. In its native state, Pokémon GO Plus has a clip that allows you to attach it to your pocket or your belt, and weirdly, it takes a small screwdriver to actually allow you to attach it to the ‘90s-style cloth bracelet so you can wear it on your wrist. Unfortunately, the price is that you are tasked with transporting around what might be the single dorkiest game peripheral known to man, and I say that as someone who writes about video games for a living. It’s something that acts as a sort of “shortcut” for a game that is already pretty basic to begin with, but it has more features than many assumed it would.
